Consider the role of foreshadowing throughout the text. How does it influence the story's outcome?

Foreshadowing:
--conversation with Whitney and Rainsford about the island lore
--Rainsford hearing the pistol shot
--Rainsford noticing Zaroff looking at him intently
--the discussion of the "game"

Foreshadowing is important in most fictional pieces, Stephen King does a great job with this in many of his novels. The best example coming to mind is shawshank redemption. The liberal points of color and mix of everyday things within the setting of the prison they are in, comes to mind only in the critical elements at the end, developing into a critical mass of emotion driven by all of the innocuous elements mentioned.
