"Invictus" by William Ernest Henley
Out of the night that covers me,
Black as the Pit from pole to pole,
I thank whatever gods may be
For my unconquerable soul.
In the fell clutch of circumstance
I have not winced nor cried aloud.
Under the bludgeonings of chance
My head is bloody, but unbowed.
Beyond this place of wrath and tears
Looms but the Horror of the shade,
And yet the menace of the years
Finds, and shall find me, unafraid.
It matters not how strait the gate,
How charged with punishments the scroll,
I am the master of my fate;
I am the captain of my soul.

"I thank whatever gods may be for my unconquerable soul" (William Ernest Henley, Invictus). I liked this line the best because I too thank whatever Gods are there for my life. It reminded my of praying and giving thanks.

I am the master of my fate.
This quote mean that in America we have the freedom to do as we choose. We can go our own paths to fit our needs. This freedom is most important to me.

In William Earnest Henley's "Invictus," the line, "I am the master of my fate" captures the idea and belief of choice. When people decide to do things, the decide what their fate will be, may it be consequence or reward. America allows people to make choices of their own, and what they do will affect them and them only. This line caught my attention because of the tone. The tone was victorious, with authority, and sounded like he knew what he was doing, and knew what would happen. America gives the chance to make their own decisions. I see this line, and know that America is the place of choice. The promised land, where you can make your own choices, whether they be good or bad.

I feel that "i am the master of my fate" is the most powerful line in this peom. I think this because i agree with the statement. I feel that it reveals that we are the controllers of how our lives will end up. We can be the ones who decide whether or not our lives will be good or bad. I think that this could be bad for those who do not work as hard and those who are just wasting their lives away.

In the poem "Invictus" by William Ernest Henly, the line "I am the captain of my soul" reflects me because I am the captain of my soul. Nobody can make my decisions for me and nobody can decide whats right and wrong in my life. I believe that my soul is my own personal escape from the complicated world. What i do is my decision. No one else's. I make my own choices on what I believe is right and wrong in my life whether others might disagree with me or not.

In "Invictus" by William Earnest Henley he says "I am the master of my fate," this means to me that you control what you decide what your actions are. The quote is very true you do control your fate you have to make the choices not anyone else. That is what that quote means to me.

In William Henley's "Invictus" the line "I am the master of my fate," really says to me that this guy has complete control of his life, and if he doesn't like it he will change it. He is the kind of guy that will die when he wants to die. He will not be silenced.

In the poem "Invictus" the line "I am the master of my fate," relates to everyones life, in my opinion. You can control your decisions, and where your life goes, for the most part. While you are young your parents contribute a little bit, but you always decide your fate. You choose where you go, who you hang out with, what you do or try, and that will all effect your fate.

In William Ernest Henley's "Invictus", the line "My head is bloody, but unbowed." represents America's view on being ruled by an imperial power. In the Revolutionary war, Britain beat America in a pulp. But America refused to bow down, and ended up winning because of their persistence.

In the poem "Invictus" by William Ernest Henley my favorite line was "I am the master of my fate; I am the master of my soul. I liked this line because it states the American dream of being able to change your fate and do whatever you want for a living. It also expresses the freedom of religion that we have in the U.S.A.

the line "I am the captain of my soul." makes me feel inspiration to take control of my own life. The word captain changes the line because a captain is in control of everything on his ship, which is the way I want my life to be.

In William Ernest Henley’s Poem, “ Invictus”, the line that states, “ I have not winced nor cried aloud,” describes me and connects to me because things do happen and I don’t complain or show the pain to others. I find no need to tell people of my pain, I can move on without having to bring people into my problems. Though, I may tell someone my pains, but only to help myself clear my mind of it.
by loudly stating my reasons of pain, I show weakness and uncertainty.

Interesting that there are the references to how this poem refers to America. The poet was English. The sentiments are profoundly English. If ever there was a poem that said 'keep a stiff upper lip' this is it.

In the poem Invictus by Ernest Henley I like the first line
"Out of the night that covers me,"
While I try and keep a positive mental attitude in my daily living, my brothers suicide at age 47, took me to a darker place in my powerlessness to help one the people I knew best. I think I did what I could, but I'll always wonder. He was in a dark place with internal and external pain that I hope to never experience.
